Controller or Assistant Controller (1736)
Our client is seeking a Controller or Assistant Controller to oversee all accounting and financial operations for our growing general contracting firm. This is a hands-on role that includes everything from financial reporting to payroll processing. Ideal candidates are comfortable working independently, managing multiple functions, and supporting project teams with accurate and timely financial data.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Management
- Manage daily accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and bank reconciliations.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statements.
- Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure accurate bookkeeping and job cost tracking with Project Accountants.
- Conduct cash flow forecasting and budget tracking.
- Work with outside CPA for annual tax filings and financial review.
Payroll Processing
- Process weekly payroll for field and office employees.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations.
- Prepare and file payroll tax reports, W-2s, and 1099s.
- Maintain accurate payroll records and reports.
- Handle certified payroll reporting for prevailing wage projects as needed.
- Process weekly union dues
- Handle the 401K program and process weekly payments
Financial Reporting & Close Processes
- Lead month-end, quarter-end, and yearly closing processes
- Prepare timely and accurate financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Coordinate annual tax filings and audits with external accounting firms
Job Costing & Project Support
- Track job costs and produce job profitability reports.
- Collaborate with project managers on budgets, cost-to-complete analysis, and billing.
- Prepare and submit progress billings (including AIA format) and support collection follow-up.
- Maintain and reconcile Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules.
- Maintain cash flow reports
- Produce and evaluate accounting reports for executive team
- Lead Project Accountants and coach them to perform their work at a high level
Compliance & Controls
- Ensure financial practices comply with GAAP and industry standards.
- Support audits, insurance renewals, bonding, and licensing documentation.
- Maintain internal controls and accounting policies.
Strategic Insight & Process Improvement
- Enhance the use of dashboards, KPIs, and analytics to measure business performance and drive strategic decisions
- Recommend and implement improvements to financial processes and systems
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 2+ years in construction or job-costing environment.
- Payroll processing experience, including certified payroll, is required.
Skills & Competencies
- Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., Foundation, Spectrum, Viewpoint, or similar).
- Strong Excel skills and ability to create and maintain financial reports.
- Solid understanding of job costing, project billing, and construction financial workflows.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of working
Compensation: $100-140,000 depending on experience level plus outstanding corporate benefits.
